Two bulls and six cows were imported from the Netherlands to America by the Holland Land Company. This was the first recorded import of the Holstein Friesian, though some suggests that the species was introduced early in the 17th century.
Anna Baldwin patented a milking machine that used a large rubber cup that connected on the cow’s udder and to a pump lever and bucket. This was not the first cow milking machine invented however, as historical records indicate that ancient Egyptians may have started using milking machines by 300 B.C.E.
Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation (known as RORA Elevation), a Holstein Friesian bull, was born. Named the bull of the century, he is one of two artificial insemination bulls that is responsible for all of the milk production today. Most cattle and milk can trace its genealogy back to RORA Elevation.
The first use of the hormone protein Recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) on dairy cows. In the 1940s, British scientists identified ST as the hormone responsible for the increase of milk production.
A prototype of the Lely Astronaut milking robot is introduced. Farmers acknowledge this as the most important invention of the 20th century for dairy farmers. It is the first automated milking system that does not require human operation.
